Andrea “Drea” Potyondy-Smith

email me Specialty:
Born: 8th of July, 1976
Height: 5’ 4” Weight: Haven’t you heard it’s not polite to ask a woman that?
Residence: Minneapolis Metro area

  • Club Affiliation: Am currently the secretary of BRF; member since 2006 (but the Johnson Brothers hounded me for a year before that)
  • Favorite childhood bike:
  • Principle cycling territory: “The East Side”—Stillwater etc., into WI; I am also very fond of “The West Side” of the ‘burbs—Corcoran area and WSW of there. When I’m not riding with the Flyers, I cruise with the West Side Loon State Cyclists.
  • Favorite ride/trail: Up by Bayfield, WI—Around Co. Rd. J from Washburn & back; the Cornucopia loop is fun, too.
  • Cycling ambition:
  • Top speed: Somewhere around 50 MPH (that would be downhill…)
  • Claim to Fame: Eating turtle juice at Frederic in 04
  • Bonus: When I’m not cycling, I: teach college English at Hennepin Tech, and do massage on the side (discounts to all Flyers!).

Proud (and not so proud) Cycling Moments:

The Good: Starting the sport with my dad at age 13—He’s my inspiration! Firehouse 500 mile club; Winning the Firehouse in 06; Finishing in the top 3 females overall in almost all the 06 Wisport races (but not the time trials! I still need work on those…); 06 Wisport jersey sweep; winning the women’s field at the SPAM race in 06 (can we say FLAT?!); winning my first medal ever for a race (It was the Firehouse; I think it was in 98).

The Bad: Flatting 8 miles from the end of Mellen in 05…but I still finished! My first ever crash in a race—but both my bike and I survived to finish; really, even the “bad” moments of cycling are pretty much positive, because they involve cycling!

The Ugly: Doing my first-ever Firehouse on a 10-speed Bridgestone—I think I was the 2nd to last person in that year; Doing the Firehouse on a hybrid (ouch!), but I still finished faster than on the 10-speed; Seeing the aftermath of the Firehouse 04 crash as I was coming in; Getting smacked in the face with turtle juice when one of those amphibians had the misfortune to get crushed by my pack at Frederic in 04; almost hitting the pace car at 06 Badger State Games road race—the driver was too busy flirting with the gals at the start/finish line to notice how much speed I was gaining on the downhill at the end of the first lap.

My Children:
(in order of acquisition)

  • My Schwinn:
  • A 21-speed purple hybrid. Shimano Altus A-10 shifters. Cro-moly frame, no suspension—a good cruising bike, which I could use as a cyclo-cross bike, if I really wanted. She’s a 94, bought for me by my dad as a high school graduation present.
  • My Trek 2120:
  • As a 97 purchased in 98, she’s a bit old and heavily used (and heavy!), but she’s treated me well; I have well over 12,000 miles on her. Carbon body with aluminum fork and chain-stay (inverted from how they make multi-material now), 24-speed Shimano 105 components.
  • My Trek 5200:
  • She’s the 04 model, and I swapped the Race-Lite wheels for a set of lighter custom builts. 18-speed Ultegra components, and a light Rock Shocks seat post for my tweaky back. I traded out the original crank for a compact FSA.
  • My Orbea:
  • She’s an 05 Aletta—my time-trialing bike. 20-speed Shimano Ultergra shifters. Carbon Profile Design aero-bars and I splurged on the carbon water bottle cages
  • Others:
  • Ok, so I have no other bikes. However, I have a set of Tempest II Carbon Tubulars for TTs & hilly races, and I am seriously considering getting a cheap full-suspension mountain bike to play around with.
